The management of the Federal University Dutse (FUD) has called for urgent federal intervention in critical infrastructure areas, including roads, water supply, hostel accommodation, and solar energy, to improve learning and living conditions in the institution.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, made the appeal when he led members of the university’s management team on a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Muhammad Goronyo, in Abuja.
Professor Gumel explained that despite being a relatively young institution, FUD has continued to grow in academic performance and administrative efficiency, but faces significant infrastructure challenges that require external support to address.
He noted that access roads within and around the university remain in poor condition, while inadequate water supply and power shortages continue to affect students and staff. He also highlighted the need for improved hostel facilities to accommodate the growing student population.
The Vice-Chancellor appealed for the Minister’s intervention in addressing the challenges, stressing that timely support would enhance the university’s capacity to deliver quality education.
In his response, Barrister Goronyo congratulated Professor Gumel on his appointment and acknowledged the infrastructural needs of the institution, describing FUD as a young university that requires sustained support from critical stakeholders to thrive.
He assured the delegation of his commitment to intervene in key areas affecting the university. The Minister said he would forward the request on road rehabilitation to the Minister of Works, Engineer David Umahi, while also leveraging his role overseeing the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to support immediate interventions.
On water supply, he pledged to engage the Ministry of Water Resources to explore solutions that would improve access within the campus.
He also disclosed plans to work with the Rural Electrification Agency to address power challenges through solar energy projects, noting that the Federal Government is already advancing renewable energy initiatives for tertiary institutions.
Barrister Goronyo urged the university management to continue engaging relevant ministries and agencies in order to attract broader support for its development needs.
Professor Gumel, in a vote of thanks, appreciated the Minister for receiving the delegation despite short notice and commended his commitment to public service and infrastructure development.
