The Federal Government of Nigeria has targeted more than 178,342 less privileged residents in Jigawa State under the Renewed Hope Social Security Grant programme, with over N11.58 billion released for its implementation.
The State Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Auwalu Danladi Sankara, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the progress of the programme in the state.
He explained that the initiative initially captured 254,413 vulnerable households but was later expanded to accommodate 178,342 beneficiaries across the 27 local government areas of Jigawa State.
According to the commissioner, implementation of the programme began in January 2026, and 126,639 households were fully paid during the first phase of the exercise.
Hon. Sanka said the programme is designed to provide financial support to vulnerable and less privileged households, improve their living conditions, and reduce the impact of economic hardship across the state.
According to him “We are currently in the second phase of the programme. A total of 25,300 payment cards are under distribution to registered beneficiaries, and we hope to complete this before the end of August,”
“In this second phase, the beneficiaries will receive a total grant of N1,997,500,000, in line with the programme’s guidelines.” he said
Hon. Sanka noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, out of compassion and concern for the common man, increased the grant from N10,000 per payment cycle to N25,000, to align with current economic realities and market indices.
‘The main objective of the Renewed Hope Social Security Grant is to support less privileged families in improving their livelihood and nutrition security. It also aims to enhance the local micro-economy, as 99% of the grant is projected to be spent at the local level”
“If you inject such an amount of money into the local economy, it will have multidimensional positive impacts on rural and national productivity, thereby supporting GDP growth,” he explained.
“As economists have posited, if you support consumption, you are indirectly promoting production. More production translates to more job creation, which in turn leads to wealth creation, growth, and development”
“So this programme is not only humanitarian but also an economic strategy for egalitarian and sustainable development,” Hon. Sanka stated.
The commissioner commended the state governor, Malam Umar Namadi, for providing support and an enabling environment for the successful implementation of the programme, which has already begun yielding fruitful results.
“Based on feedback and testimonials received from the community, the programme has already started making a difference by transforming families’ lives for the better.
‘Thanks to President Tinubu, thanks to Governor Namadi, thanks to members of our team, and all stakeholders who contributed to making this dream a reality,” Sanka stated.
Hon. Sanka further noted that as they continue with implementation, they will also keep policymakers and the general public abreast of progress for better assessment and future planning.
In her testimony after receiving the Renewed Hope grant, Binta Musa of Rajo community in Dutse Local Government Area said she collected the N75,000 in February, and since then, her family’s life has improved significantly.
She noted that when she collected the money, she used N30,000 as capital to start selling awara (Tofu). She bought soya beans, groundnut oil, and other necessary ingredients.
“Alhamdulillah, This has significantly improved our livelihood and family economy. Today, I am proud to be complementing my husband’s efforts in feeding our family. This grant has rekindled and renewed my hope of having children who are well-fed, healthy, and educated,” Binta stated.
For Rabi Ismail Kiyawa, the grant has empowered her to expand her capital in cap-making. “I reinvested N40,000 in cap-making, and I am happy to tell you that my income has increased because I now hire other people to make them based on the demand from customers,” she said
