The First Lady of Jigawa State, Hajiya Hadiza Umar Namadi, has urged nursing mothers to invest in the future of their children by embracing exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life.
Mrs. Namadi made the call on Saturday while launching the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week at Madobi Primary Health Care Centre in Dutse.
The 2026 campaign, themed “Breaking Barriers for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthening What Works,” focuses on promoting breastfeeding as a foundation for healthy child development and long-term well-being.
She said the week serves as a reminder of the critical role mothers play in giving their children the strongest possible start in life.
According to her, breastfeeding is not only a source of nutrition but also a powerful investment in the health, growth and future of children, families and communities.
“By exclusively breastfeeding your child, you are making a great investment in the child’s future. It will help the child achieve his or her dreams and contribute positively to the development of the family, community and the country,” she said.
The First Lady commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her commitment to improving maternal and child health through various healthcare initiatives.
She also praised the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency and UNICEF for their continued support in strengthening the healthcare system in the state.
Mrs. Namadi reaffirmed the commitment of the Jigawa State Government under Governor Umar Namadi to improving the health and well-being of women and children across the state.
She called on governments, development partners and other stakeholders to create an enabling environment where every mother is informed, supported and empowered to breastfeed with confidence.
