The Jigawa State Government has expressed deep concern over the low turnout of female teachers in the ongoing recruitment exercise for education secretaries across the state.
Chairman State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Prof. Haruna Musa disclosed this in an interview with DAILY POST.
He described the trend as a setback to the Board ‘s commitment toward promoting gender inclusion and leadership balance in the education sector.
Prof.Musa stated this while reacting on the recent call by Higher level women advocates for inclusion of more women in leadership and decision making especially in education sector.
“Only 14% women currently occupy leadership positions such as head teachers or deputies”report indicated.
According to him” Women are known for their transparency and accountability we want women to assume leadership in education sector but it seems like they are not ready to take charge “
” Recently we opened portal for recruitment of qualified education secretaries, 1156 applied for the 27 vacancies, 129 passed the CBT exam, they also undergo competency assessment and the results will be out very soon and they will be called for interview”
” Out of this 1156 only 44 women applied, 14 were able to meet with the criteria only four wrote the CBT examination and two are able to pass and say for competency examination” The chairman said.
He said their non participation may be due to the complexity and discourage from their families.
The chairman however encourage the women to use the opportunity and follow all the process.
“we are giving them a chance so let them use it and we are ready to support them to become part of education secretaries” He said.
