No fewer than 162 inmates have graduated from basic and post-basic literacy programmes across correctional centres in JIgawa state.
Executive Secretary, Jigawa State Agency for Mass Education Dr. Abbas A. Abbas, stated this while speaking during graduation and Matriculation at Kakau Correctional Centre in Dutse.
He said the initiative was part of the state government’s commitment to providing quality education for citizens of all ages.
He said the programme aligns with Governor Umar Namadi’s 12-point agenda on educational development and aims to equip inmates with literacy and educational opportunities that would support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
According to him” we also matriculated news inmates for the programme, this is part of the Jigawa State Government efforts to ensure every citizen has access to basic education”
“The development will also help in provision of security in the state by making the inmates to become useful in the society thereby contributing towards the state and National development” he said.
Dr. Abbas noted that all graduating inmates were presented with certificates to enable them continue their education after completing their sentences.
According to him, education remains a key tool for personal transformation, and extending literacy programmes to correctional centres reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive education.
Representing the Controller of Corrections, Assistant Controller-General of Corrections (ACG) M.Y. Fari commended the Jigawa State Government for using education as a means of promoting positive behavioural change among inmates.
He appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to provide additional classrooms, textbooks and writing materials to strengthen educational activities in correctional facilities across the state.
“We are also appealing to groups and individuals to complement the state Government efforts by providing additional teaching and learning facilities”
Some of the inmates commended the Jigawa State Government also assured to continue with their education after their freedom
