The Jigawa State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has rejected the purported removal of its Chairman, Muhammad Zangina Kura, describing the action as unconstitutional, unethical and unacceptable.
The position was contained in a resolution adopted during an extraordinary congress of the chapel held on June 10, 2026, following a series of letters received by the body concerning an alleged leadership crisis.
In the resolution signed by members present at the congress, the chapel said it had thoroughly reviewed the correspondence relating to the purported removal of the chairman and found no constitutional basis for the action.
According to the congress, the move was viewed as a personal witch-hunt and vendetta against the chairman, stressing that the chapel remains committed to operating strictly in accordance with the provisions of the NUJ constitution.
The congress further stated that its review of the letters revealed no record of any complaint lodged by members of the chapel and that there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations contained in the correspondence.
It therefore condemned the action in its entirety and called on all parties to uphold decorum, professionalism and due process in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The congress also unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of Muhammad Zangina Kura, expressing appreciation for his stewardship and wishing him continued wisdom and courage.
However, despite the vote of confidence, members resolved that Kura should temporarily step aside and hand over the affairs of the chapel to the Vice Chairman pending further developments on the matter.
The congress reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the union and discharging its responsibilities in line with the ethics and standards of the journalism profession.
Members pledged to continue working towards the advancement of the union and the promotion of professionalism in the media industry.
