The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 17-year-old housewife over the alleged killing of her husband Sani Nuhu in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
The spokesperson of the command, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists on Saturday.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., when the newly married woman allegedly poisoned her husband just days after their wedding.
SP Adam explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased ate his lunch at home and later fell seriously ill. He was subsequently rushed to a hospital for medical attention, where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation and arrested the wife of the deceased as the principal suspect.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison.
She reportedly told investigators that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed contributed to her actions.
The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough investigation. Upon completion, the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution.
The police command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, advising families to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving marital and domestic disputes.
The command further warned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences.
