The Jigawa State Police Command has announced a statewide ban on the sale, possession, and use of fireworks, knockoutspp during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Dutse by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Shi’isu Adam, said is part of efforts to guarantee a peaceful and safe celebration.
He explained that the decision was informed by recurring security and safety concerns associated with the use of such explosives.
According to him, loud fireworks often trigger panic, cause injuries, and lead to damage of property, especially in crowded areas.
The statement said, the ban is aimed at protecting vulnerable members of society, including children, the elderly, and people with health conditions who may be adversely affected by explosive sounds.
“Our priority is the safety of everyone. These loud explosives pose serious risks, particularly to children and vulnerable individuals, and we urge residents to exercise restraint during the celebrations,” SP Adam said.
He appealed to parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against violating the directive, stressing that collective responsibility is key to a safe festive season.
He warned that anyone found flouting the ban would be arrested and prosecuted, adding that the command would not hesitate to enforce the law.
SP Adam disclosed that police personnel have been deployed to strategic locations across the state, including markets, churches, and other public places. He said patrols and checkpoints have also been intensified.
“Our officers are on high alert across the state. We are determined to enforce this ban strictly and maintain law and order throughout the festive period,” he assured.
The PPRO further urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals involved in the sale or use of fireworks and knockouts to the nearest security agency, describing public cooperation as vital to the success of the operation.
The command wishes the Christians and all residents a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year, the police command reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the celebrations remain joyful and incident-free.
