The Voice of African Universities (VAU) has declared that no individual regardless of wealth, family background, or social connections is above institutional rules and regulations.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the organization’s Vice President for Higher Education Development, Fafana Khalidou, and made available to STANDARD TRUST NEWS on Saturday.
According to the statement, the warning followed an incident at the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, where a parent allegedly appeared uninvited at an examination venue and demanded that his daughter be allowed to sit for an exam without the required clearance card. The confrontation reportedly caused a scene at the venue.
VAU explained that when the supervising lecturer, Dr. M. Adamu, insisted on compliance with examination regulations, the situation escalated into a verbal altercation. The parent and student were accused of secretly recording the exchange, editing the footage to distort facts, and circulating it on social media in an attempt to discredit both the lecturer and the institution.
Describing the act as “a calculated attempt to undermine institutional integrity and academic governance,” VAU condemned it as “malicious and targeted blackmail” against the lecturer and the university.
“No individual, regardless of wealth, family background, or social connections, is above institutional rules,” the statement emphasized. “Respect for ethics and due process remains the foundation upon which higher education stands.”
The organization commended Dr. Adamu for his “measured and principled response,” describing his conduct as an example of professionalism under provocation. It further reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance against attempts to intimidate or blackmail educators performing their lawful duties, warning that such actions threaten the integrity of academic freedom and fairness.
“The lecturer’s response—reminding the parent that ethics must be respected regardless of status—was both appropriate and commendable,” Khalidou stated. “It is unacceptable for educators to be vilified for upholding academic standards.”
VAU also praised MAAUN for taking prompt disciplinary and legal action to address the incident, calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions against those responsible in line with university statutes.
“We will continue to monitor developments and advocate for stronger safeguards across African universities against similar abuses,” the statement added.
The organization urged universities across the continent to stand united in defending merit-based systems and protecting educators from undue pressure or interference.
