The Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) has set a target to immunise 3,186,521 children across the state against measles and rubella as part of an integrated vaccination campaign scheduled to hold from October 6 to 15, 2025.
This was disclosed by the State Immunization Officer, Shehu Ibrahim, during a media dialogue and sensitisation meeting ahead of the campaign.
According to him, the exercise will cover about 48 to 49 percent of the state’s population, focusing on children aged between 9 months and 14 years. He added that the campaign will also include the administration of NOPV to children aged 0 to 59 months, HPV vaccines for girls aged 9 to 14 years, and routine immunisation (RI) for children aged 0 to 23 months.
Shehu stated that the campaign will be conducted across all 288 wards in the 27 local government areas of the state, using primary and secondary health facilities as well as other public buildings as vaccination centres.
He urged parents and guardians to ensure their children receive the vaccines, warning against non-compliance which could expose communities to preventable outbreaks. He also appealed for maximum cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the success of the programme.
Speaking earlier, the State Coordinator of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Kabiru Mustapha, noted that the Federal Government aims to reach about 100 million children nationwide through the integrated campaign.
Dr. Mustapha explained that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality rates associated with vaccine-preventable diseases.
Recent data shows that between 2019 and 2024, Nigeria recorded 94,304 confirmed cases of measles with 714 deaths. In 2025 alone, the country has so far recorded 4,637 measles cases, out of which 1,539 were confirmed.
