The Kano State Government has directed the State Hisbah Board to begin preparations for the mass wedding of 2,000 couples under its ongoing matrimonial support programme.
Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, disclosed this in a telephone interview on Thursday. He said the preparations would soon commence to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise.
“We are planning to conduct the mass wedding for another batch of 2,000 couples as directed by the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” Aminudeen stated.
Although the exact date for the ceremony has not been announced, the Hisbah official explained that there are laid-down procedures for participants. According to him, all intending couples must undergo compulsory medical screening to verify their health status.
“The medical tests will include HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, genotype, and drug tests, among others. Anyone who fails to participate in the screening will be automatically disqualified,” he added.
The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf revived the mass wedding initiative as part of efforts to empower women and promote social stability. The scheme targets widows, divorcees, and young women whose families cannot afford the costs of marriage preparations.
The programme, according to the government, is also aimed at curbing social vices such as prostitution and restoring moral values among youths in the state.
