The Kano State Government has officially changed the name of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and People with Special Needs.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the change during a recent State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Kano.

In a statement issued to newsmen, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi, explained that the decision was made following a request to replace the word “Disabled” with the more respectful phrase “People with Special Needs.”

She noted that the old terminology was outdated and stigmatizing.

“Nobody is truly disabled  everyone has something valuable to offer. The new name reflects dignity and recognizes people’s potential,” the Commissioner said.

Hajiya Abdullahi commended Governor Yusuf for his constant concern and commitment to the welfare of people with special needs.

“There has never been a time I met with His Excellency without him asking about the condition of people with special needs or how the government can better support them,” she added.

She stressed that the renaming goes beyond symbolism, describing it as a foundation for broader reforms aimed at fostering inclusion, empowerment, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
