Residents of Taura and Kwalam communities in Jigawa State have erupted in joy following the restoration of electricity after 16 years of total blackout.
The prolonged outage had crippled small businesses, increased the cost of living, and hindered access to essential services such as potable water, healthcare, and modern communication tools. Community members noted that the return of electricity marks a major relief for households and businesses that have struggled for years without power.
Many residents described the restoration as a historic milestone that will significantly reshape the social and economic landscape of the area.
Speaking at the official launching of the project during the Citizens’ Engagement Forum in Taura, Governor Umar Namadi said the reconnection aligns with his campaign promise to restore stable power to 104 communities across Ringim and Taura Local Government Areas. He emphasized that rural and urban electrification remain key components of his administration’s broader agenda to expand energy access, stimulate economic growth, and curb rural-urban migration.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner of Power and Energy, Engr. Surajo A. Musa, disclosed that the state government has made substantial investments in rehabilitating old power lines, replacing faulty transformers, and upgrading distribution networks to guarantee reliable electricity supply in the affected communities.
He urged residents to take full ownership of the project to ensure its sustainability and long-term success.
