Governor Malam Umar Namadi has launched the Jigawa State Old Age Social Protection Scheme, targeting 5,740 elderly citizens with monthly cash transfers of ₦10,000, alongside free healthcare and social care services across the state.
Speaking at the official launch held at the Dutse Local Government Secretariat, Governor Namadi said the initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to building an inclusive and compassionate society.
He explained that the programme aims to provide continuous support for citizens throughout their life cycle, complementing other welfare interventions such as the Maternal Cash Transfer Scheme and the Social Security Scheme for Persons with Disabilities.
“Under the new scheme, 20 elderly persons from each of the 287 political wards will benefit from the monthly ₦10,000 cash transfer in the first phase,” the governor stated.
According to him, the Jigawa State Rehabilitation Board will manage the cash transfer component, while the Jigawa State Contributory Health Insurance Management Agency (JICHMA) will oversee healthcare services. The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development will provide home visits, counselling, and psychosocial support.
Governor Namadi added that the intervention aligns with the state’s Social Protection Policy and Law, which promote dignity, equity, and access to essential services for vulnerable groups.
He further revealed plans to introduce an Orphans Welfare Programme to support children in vulnerable conditions and called on communities to care for and respect the elderly, describing them as “the pillars upon which our society was built.”
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Malam Musa commended Governor Namadi for prioritising the welfare of the elderly and persons with special needs. He said the initiative would help reduce street begging, improve health conditions, and enhance economic stability across the state.
He also urged fellow beneficiaries to use the support judiciously.
Each beneficiary received an ATM card to facilitate the monthly withdrawal of their stipends.
