The Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, has called for stronger global collaboration and deliberate action to advance and protect girls’ education, safety, and security.
The Speaker made the appeal while speaking shortly after a children’s parliamentary session performed by female students to commemorate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child
He said , education and empowerment of girls remain central to achieving sustainable development, lamenting that millions of girls across the world continue to face barriers such as insecurity, conflicts, displacement, and poverty that disrupt learning and threaten their future.
The Speaker reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting policies and laws that promote access to quality education, economic opportunities, and protection for children, especially girls.
“We supported the allocation of 32 percent of the 2024 budget and 26 percent of the 2025 budget to education. These investments are already yielding results by improving learning outcomes, reducing the number of out-of-school children, and expanding access to education regardless of social or geographical background,” he stated.
Dangyatin commended the performance of the girls during the mock parliamentary session, expressing optimism that one day, the Jigawa House of Assembly could be presided over by a female Speaker.
During the session, members of the children parliamentarians appealed to the state government to establish digital learning centres in all local government areas to enhance access to technology and modern education.
They also commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s for sustaining the policy of free education for girls from primary to university level, describing it as a lifeline for thousands of families.
