The National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Audu, has threatened to direct all teachers to remain at home until the Federal Government guarantees adequate security in schools across the country.
Audu issued the warning while speaking at the 8th Quadrennial Conference of Delegates of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Jigawa State Chapter, held in Dutse.
He expressed deep concern over the worsening state of insecurity nationwide, particularly the frequent attacks on schools.
According to him, “In a situation where your place of work is not safe, I do not think there is any need for you to go there.”
He lamented that many schools had recently been attacked, resulting in the killing and abduction of teachers and students.
The NUT President noted that the union’s primary concern is the safety of teachers and students, stressing the need for a secure and enabling environment for effective teaching and learning.
“In a situation where the security of our teachers is not guaranteed, we have no other option than to ask them to stay at home until the problem is resolved,” he said.
Audu therefore urged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of schools across Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the newly elected Chairman of the NUT in Jigawa State, Comrade Dauda A. Shua’aibu Guri, pledged to run an inclusive administration aimed at moving the union forward.
He also promised to protect the interests of teachers and improve their welfare across the state.
