Five members of the House of Representatives from Jigawa State have been ranked among non-performing lawmakers after recording no motions, bills, or visible plenary activity within a 12-month period.
According to the Deliberative Barometer and Policy-Focus Productivity Report (NASS-DBPFR), released by the Erudite Growth and Advancement Foundation (ERGAF-Africa) over the weekend, the legislators failed to sponsor bills, move motions, raise petitions, or contribute to debates at the National Assembly.
The affected lawmakers are:Adamu Yakubu (Buji/Birnin-Kudu), Ibrahim Usman (Hadejia/Kafin Hausa/Auyo), Nazifi Sani (Gumel, Maigatari, Sule-Tankarkar/Gagarawa), Dahiru Madaki (Dutse/Kiyawa), Sai’du Miga (Jahun/Miga)
Analysts described the trend as a setback to legislative accountability and participatory governance, stressing that active engagement in debates, motions, and lawmaking is the core responsibility of parliamentarians.
Meanwhile, one of the lawmakers, Hon. Nazifi Sani, representing Gumel, Gagarawa, Maigatari, and Sule-Tankarkar Federal Constituency, has come under direct criticism from his constituents.
In an open letter addressed to him, a constituent, Haruna Shuaibu Danzomo, accused the lawmaker of “zero performance” since his re-election in 2023. He alleged that Hon. Sani had failed to fulfill campaign promises, sponsor bills, initiate development projects, or give the constituency a voice in national decision-making.
The letter also highlighted the neglect of key sectors such as education and health, stating that schools remained poorly funded while health facilities in the constituency lacked basic equipment.
“Over the years, we have seen no significant development projects, no programs aimed at improving our standard of living, and no action taken to address the critical challenges facing our people,” the letter read in part.
However, the lawmaker’s media team swiftly dismissed the allegations. In a statement, Comrade Abubakar Idris, Chairman of Hon. Sani’s Media Team, described the criticisms as “mere political propaganda” driven by selfish interests.
According to him, the constituency has benefitted from several interventions facilitated by the lawmaker, including employment programmes, fertilizer distribution, solar-powered streetlights, and the construction of primary and Islamiyya school blocks.
He maintained that Hon. Sani remained committed to the development and empowerment of his constituents despite the smear campaign against him.
