The First Lady of Jigawa State, Hajiya Hadiza Umar Namadi, has officially launched the “Free to Shine” campaign for the triple elimination of HIV/AIDS, syphilis, and hepatitis in Gumel and Hadejia Emirates.
The campaign is part of a continental initiative championed by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), aimed at accelerating the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis across Africa.
The campaign also aimed to protect the next generation by ensuring women of reproductive age have access to quality health services, screening, and treatment.
While flagging off the programme, Mrs. Namadi said the Jigawa State Government remains committed to investing in healthcare and preventive programmes that safeguard women and children.
According to her “This campaign is about protecting lives, particularly our women and children. We must come together to eliminate stigma, encourage regular medical testing, and support those affected to live healthy and fulfilled lives,” she stated.
The First Lady further stressed that stigma and discrimination often drive people away from seeking treatment, which worsens the spread of the diseases.
She urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society to support the campaign through sensitization and advocacy at the grassroots.
Health experts at the event described the campaign as a timely intervention, noting that Nigeria still records cases of mother-to-child transmission despite global efforts to end it. They said the initiative would scale up awareness on prevention, early testing, and treatment.
In recognition of her tireless contributions, the Friends of Hospital Committee at Hadejia General Hospital honoured Mrs. Namadi with an award of appreciation.
The campaign, which is expected to reach communities across the state, is anticipated to reduce new infections, save lives, and strengthen Jigawa’s health indices in line with the state’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage.
