The Federal Ministry of Education has declared open the maiden National Summit on the Implementation of Concurrent Running of Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Degree Programmes in Colleges of Education.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad described the summit as a historic milestone in the nation’s teacher education sector following the enactment of the Federal Colleges of Education Act, No. 43 of 2023.
According to her, the legislation empowers colleges of education to run NCE and degree programmes concurrently, without the need for university affiliation. She explained that the reform will not only expand academic opportunities but also strengthen the institutions’ core mandate of producing skilled and professional teachers in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
“This bold reform marks a new chapter in teacher education. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the policy succeeds and delivers the expected results for the future of Nigerian education,” Ahmad stated.
She further urged stakeholders to prioritize quality assurance, resource mobilization, curriculum development, and sustained enrollment as part of efforts to guarantee the success of the policy.
The summit brought together education administrators, policymakers, academics, and stakeholders across the country to deliberate on strategies for effective implementation of the concurrent NCE and degree programmes in colleges of education.
