The Federal Government has approved a 40 per cent salary increase for lecturers in federal tertiary institutions and introduced a new professorial cadre allowance that will raise professors’ monthly earnings by over ₦140,000.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, during a television interview, where he confirmed that the new allowance was created under President Bola Tinubu’s administration to improve lecturers’ welfare.
The pay rise follows a historic 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which ends a 16-year delay in renegotiating the 2009 agreement.
Alausa said the deal includes nine clearly defined Earned Academic Allowances that specify who qualifies, what each payment covers, and the total cost to government.
He assured that implementation has already begun, noting that funding has been secured and official circulars released to ensure full execution of the agreement.
