A Jigawa State High Court sitting in Dutse has sentenced an Abubakar Muhammed of Nomi village, Taura Local Government Area, to death by hanging for raping an 15-year-old boy.
Justice Ado Yusuf of Court 5 delivered the judgment on Thursday after the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful carnal intercourse with the victim, who is from the same community.
In his ruling, Justice Yusuf held that the offence violated Sections 3(1)(a) and (b) of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law of Jigawa State and is punishable under Sections 3(2), 4, and 5 of the VAPP Law, 2012.
The court also ordered the convict to pay ₦5 million as compensation to the victim.
Director of Public Prosecution, Jigawa State Ministry of Justice, Yahaya Abdullahi, Esq., described the ruling as sound and just, noting that it would serve as a deterrent to others.
He commended the judiciary for its commitment to justice and reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to fully implement the VAPP Law and other legal measures to protect citizens from violence.
