A British Airways flight from London to Abuja made an emergency diversion to Barcelona, Spain, in the early hours of Monday following the death of a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal onboard.
The flight, which left London’s Heathrow Airport at about 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, was expected to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by 5:00 a.m. Monday.
According to sources, the deceased, an indigene of Anambra State believed to be in his early 80s, had been battling an undisclosed illness and was returning to Nigeria for medical attention when he died mid-flight.
The development reportedly caused panic among passengers, with the situation further complicated by a secondary medical emergency involving a pregnant woman. Her condition remained unclear as of press time.
In a statement to passengers, British Airways expressed condolences and apologised for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
“Passengers are advised to expect an email with further information and may contact our Live Chat feature for assistance. We sincerely regret the disruption and appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding,” the airline said.
The airline confirmed that a replacement aircraft would convey the remaining passengers to Abuja. The new flight, initially scheduled to depart Barcelona at 2:00 p.m. local time, was later rescheduled to 2:50 p.m., with an expected arrival time in Abuja around 5:45 p.m. Nigerian time.
British Airways reiterated its apology to passengers and assured continued support throughout the journey.
