The Jigawa State and Local Governments Contributory Pension Scheme Board has launched a strategic initiative aimed at addressing gaps in its internal audit system.

Executive Secretary of the Scheme, Dr. Bilyaminu Aminu Shittu, disclosed this while speaking at a two-day capacity-building workshop for audit staff.

The training, titled “Narrowing the Expectation Gap Arising from Internal Audit Role  A Practical Approach,” is designed to strengthen the effectiveness of internal auditors and improve accountability within the pension scheme.

Dr. Bilyaminu Aminu Shittu, identified several challenges hindering the performance of internal auditors, including the absence of a clearly defined schedule of duties, delayed submission of audit reports, lack of documented audit guidelines, and strained relationships between auditors and stakeholders.

According to him, the training is intended to bridge these gaps by providing participants with practical knowledge and tools required to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

Dr. Shittu said discussions during the workshop focused on developing a comprehensive schedule of duties for internal auditors, producing an audit manual for the Scheme, and fostering stronger collaboration between auditors and stakeholders.

He stressed that an effective internal audit function is critical to ensuring the continuity, safety and stability of the pension scheme, as well as achieving its overall objectives.

“The workshop will help internal auditors better understand their expected roles and functions, thereby reducing misconceptions that often create friction with stakeholders,” he said.

The Executive Secretary added that the initiative is part of Board’s commitment to improving service delivery and ensuring compliance with established standards in accounting, internal control, investment management and information technology.
