The newly inaugurated 5th Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NIEEE), Kano Chapter, Engr. Hauwa Ibrahim Khaleel, has called for strict adherence to safety standards in solar energy deployment, as Nigeria intensifies its transition to renewable energy.
Khaleel made the call on Saturday during her inauguration ceremony, where she pledged to reposition the chapter for greater professional impact, with a focus on innovation, inclusivity and national development.
Speaking on the theme of the event, “Safe Solar Systems: Engineering Standards, Field Practices and Risk Control,” the new chairman described it as timely and critical to Nigeria’s energy future.
“It is a call to action. It challenges engineers, regulators, and practitioners to prioritize safety, uphold standards, and adopt best practices in solar energy deployment,” she said. “In doing so, it safeguards investments, protects lives, and ensures that solar energy remains a reliable pillar of Nigeria’s energy future.”
Khaleel expressed gratitude to members of the institute for the confidence reposed in her, noting that her emergence as chairman represents a collective responsibility.
“I stand before you today with deep humility and immense gratitude, accepting the responsibility of serving as the 5th Chairman of this great chapter,” she stated.
She also commended the outgoing leadership for laying a solid foundation for the growth of the institute, assuring members that her administration would build on existing achievements.
“I wish to sincerely appreciate the outgoing Chairman, Engr. Dr Ibrahim Abba, Engr. Dr A.T. Sulaiman, and the entire executive committee for their dedication and leadership,” she said.
The new chairman outlined key priorities of her administration, including professional development, capacity building, industry collaboration and policy engagement, all aimed at strengthening engineering practices in line with global standards.
Khaleel further stressed the importance of inclusivity and mentorship in advancing the profession, particularly in nurturing young engineers to meet emerging challenges in the renewable energy sector.
She pledged to lead with integrity, transparency and accountability, while calling on members to support efforts to strengthen the Kano Chapter and contribute meaningfully to national development through safe and sustainable engineering practices.
