The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, has commended Governor Umar A. Namadi for initiating a free Ramadan feeding programme targeted at vulnerable and less privileged residents across the state.
In a statement jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Ismai’la Ibrahim Dutse, and the Acting Secretary, Comrade Aminu Umar Shuwajo, the union described the initiative as timely and compassionate, noting that it would ease hardship and strengthen communal solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan.
The NUJ said the programme reflects the state government’s commitment to inclusive governance and social welfare, particularly at a time when many families face economic challenges.
“This programme is a clear demonstration that the government is mindful of the needs of the less privileged and determined to ensure that no one is left behind during this sacred period,” the statement read.
While applauding the governor’s effort, the union called on food vendors engaged for the exercise to discharge their duties with diligence, integrity and the fear of Allah by providing adequate and quality meals to beneficiaries throughout the fasting period.
The council further pledged to closely monitor the implementation of the programme to ensure strict compliance with contractual terms.
As a watchdog of society and promoter of transparency and accountability, the NUJ assured residents that it would track the exercise to guarantee that it achieves its intended objectives.
The union added that the initiative not only promotes a sense of community but also sets a precedent for similar social intervention programmes aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable groups in the state.
The NUJ also urged other stakeholders to complement government efforts in supporting those in need during Ramadan and beyond.
