Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim following Sunday’s disappointing Premier League draw against relegation-threatened Leeds United.
It was reported reports that the English Premier League club announced the decision in a statement published on its official website on Monday.
According to the club, the decision was taken in a bid to improve United’s chances of securing the highest possible league finish this season. The Red Devils currently sit sixth on the Premier League table, trailing leaders Arsenal by 17 points.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the statement read.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible Premier League finish.”
United’s poor run of form is believed to have influenced the decision, with the club managing just one win in their last five league matches.
The statement also pointed to Amorim’s recent comments on his job security, during which he insisted he retained full managerial authority and was not merely a coach.
Following the draw with Leeds, Amorim appeared frustrated and defensive, rebuking reporters over what he described as “selective information” while responding to questions about transfers and his future at the club.
The 40-year-old Portuguese manager had repeatedly stated that he had no intention of leaving Old Trafford, stressing that his role extended beyond coaching responsibilities.
