Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State is set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported.
The governor’s Political Adviser, Mr Istifanus Nwansat, disclosed this on Monday in an interview with journalists in Abuja. He said the decision was informed by the lingering crisis within the PDP, which he described as making the party an unreliable platform for political actors.
According to Nwansat, the move to the APC represents the least risky option available to the governor under the current political climate. He added that Muftwang’s defection would also ensure alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s political and governance direction, particularly as it affects Plateau State.
“The crisis in the PDP has made it an unrealistic platform to contest elections,” Nwansat said. “From our assessment of all available options, we have concluded that the safest decision, with the least risk factor, is to move into the APC.
“That is why the governor is moving to the APC. He believes it is reasonable, as a leader, to align his people with the President. Even as PDP members, we appreciate and recognise the efforts of Mr President in putting things right.”
Meanwhile, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, who represents Ondo Central Senatorial District, has said there is no formidable opposition or coalition capable of defeating President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the Adegbonmire Renewed Hope Mega Empowerment Programme in Ondo Central, the senator said allies of the President were already mobilising nationwide to ensure his re-election, which he predicted would be an overwhelming victory for the APC.
“Where is the opposition? I don’t know of any serious one,” Adegbonmire said. “Who is in the coalition? Who is their candidate? There is no viable alternative.”
He added that the empowerment of about 900 beneficiaries across the district was aimed at supporting the re-election of President Tinubu, the APC, and the state government.
“This empowerment is in support of the President, the state government and my party,” he said. “Since the President cannot do everything alone, those of us supporting him must ensure that Nigerians feel the impact of his leadership.”
