India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on Friday for high-level talks focused on defence, trade, and energy cooperation. The visit comes as India faces strong pressure from the United States to reduce its purchases of Russian oil.
Putin received a grand welcome at the presidential palace, including an honour guard and 21-gun salute, before beginning formal discussions with Modi. The two leaders highlighted plans to expand defence sales, joint manufacturing, and cooperation in technology and space.
Their meeting also touched on the ongoing Ukraine conflict and global economic tensions, including US President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on Indian products. Modi’s warm airport reception for Putin, including a shared car ride to a private dinner, signalled the strength of their longstanding ties.
India continues to balance its strategic partnership with Russia while managing tense trade negotiations with the US. Analysts say the visit is part of India’s effort to diversify its economic and security alliances during a challenging global period.
The leaders are also expected to push for stronger business cooperation. Although bilateral trade reached nearly $69 billion last year, Indian exports remain low. India hopes for broader market access while continuing to benefit from discounted Russian oil.
