A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State and the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Mustapha Sule Lamido, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Abba Mu’azu Abiyos, who was recently arrested over a Facebook post.
Lamido, in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, described Abiyos’ detention as a violation of fundamental human rights and an attack on freedom of expression.
According to him, “The continued detention and reported torture of Abba Muazu Abiyos for expressing his views on the Roni Local Government water vendors empowerment is deeply concerning. This action represents a gross violation of freedom of expression and an infringement on the fundamental rights of citizens in a democratic society.”
He further called on authorities responsible for the arrest to release the detainee without conditions, stating that every Nigerian has the right to express opinions freely without fear or intimidation.
Abiyos was reportedly arrested following his online criticism of an empowerment initiative by the Roni Local Government Council, where water vendors were provided with wheelbarrows and jerrycans. The initiative sparked public debate, leading to reactions including the controversial arrest.
In its response, the Jigawa State Police Command said the arrest was based on a petition alleging criminal defamation against the Executive Chairman of Roni Local Government.
A statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, said the suspect was taken into custody on 12th November 2025 and that due process was followed.
According to him, “The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, 12th November 2025, thoroughly investigated, and arraigned in court for the offences of Cyberstalking and Inciting Disturbance, contrary to Section 23 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention) Amendment Act 2024 and Section 114 of the Penal Code.”
Shiisu emphasized that the case has already been charged to court and urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation.
He added that the Command remains committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will continue to ensure justice is served in accordance with the law.
