A member of the House of Representatives representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, Hon. Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the deepening leadership crisis rocking the party.
In a letter dated November 11, 2025, and addressed to the Chairperson of Zaitawa Ward in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Koki said his decision was guided by his constitutional right to freedom of association.
“By virtue of the right conferred upon me by Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), Article 7.1 of the NNPP Constitution, and other relevant laws, I hereby resign my membership of the NNPP effective Tuesday, November 11, 2025,” the letter read in part.
The lawmaker explained that the lingering internal crisis within the NNPP’s national leadership had made it “difficult, if not impossible,” for him to continue performing his legislative duties effectively and providing quality representation to the people of Kano Municipal.
“My decision to leave the NNPP became necessary because the leadership crisis at the centre has made it hard for me to discharge my duties and serve my constituents effectively,” he stated.
Koki, who was elected under the NNPP platform during the 2023 general elections, expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve and for the trust and support he enjoyed from its members.
“I sincerely thank the party for the opportunity to serve under its platform. The support, trust, and experience I gained during my tenure have been invaluable, and I remain deeply grateful to the leadership and members of the NNPP at all levels,” he added.
As of the time of filing this report, Koki had not announced his next political move or the party he intends to join.
It would be recalled that another Kano lawmaker, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, who left the NNPP two months ago, officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last weekend.
