Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has called on former United States President Donald Trump to apologise to Nigeria over his recent remarks about the country.
Jibrin criticised Trump for describing Nigeria as “a disgraced country,” calling the statement offensive, undiplomatic, and disrespectful to the Nigerian people.
Recall that Trump had earlier designated Nigeria as “a Country of Particular Concern” over alleged killings of Christians and reportedly threatened military action against Nigeria if the government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
Reacting in a viral video on Friday, Jibrin condemned Trump’s comments, describing them as a violation of diplomatic norms and international law.
“For the president of the United States to say, ‘You are doing this, and we are going to attack you, and Nigeria is a disgraced country’ — this is quite unacceptable,” he said.
“We believe he should understand the implications of such remarks, retract his statement, and apologise to Nigeria.”
The Deputy Senate President further noted that Trump’s comments were inconsistent with the values America claims to uphold, stressing that no foreign leader has the right to issue military threats against another sovereign nation without due process.
