The Dangote Refinery has announced plans to increase its production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.
When completed, the expansion will make the facility the largest refinery in the world, overtaking India’s Jamnagar Refinery.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Sunday, the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said the move demonstrates confidence in Nigeria’s economic future and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of positioning the country as a global supplier of refined petroleum products.
“We are more than doubling production—from 650,000 barrels to 1.4 million barrels per day,” Dangote stated. “This will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.”
He added that the expansion represents “confidence in Nigeria, in Africa, and in our capacity to shape our own energy future.”
Dangote commended the Federal Government for its continued support and for implementing policies that have stimulated industrial growth, such as the Nigeria First Policy, Naira-for-Crude Policy, and the One-Stop Shop Initiative.
According to him, these policies have transformed the downstream oil sector and encouraged private investment in domestic refining.
Dangote also revealed that recent disruptions at the refinery—linked to union activities and sabotage attempts—were successfully resolved through government mediation.
He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustaining operations and contributing to Nigeria’s energy security and economic development.
