No fewer than seven persons have lost their lives, while fourteen others sustained injuries in a motor accident in Jigawa State.
The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday by its spokesman, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam.
According to the statement, the accident occurred on Sunday evening along the Chaichai–Ringim road when two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.
SP Adam explained that the crash happened at Yakasawa village in Ringim Local Government Area and involved a Golf 3 wagon and a Sienna vehicle.
“Seven (7) persons died on the spot, while fourteen (14) others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Ringim General Hospital for treatment,” he said.
The police spokesman added that the injured victims are currently receiving medical attention at the hospital.
He warned motorists against dangerous overtaking, overloading of passengers and goods, and urged road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
The incident comes just days after about fifty people lost their lives in separate road accidents and a canoe capsize across parts of Jigawa State.
Residents have attributed the frequent accidents to reckless driving and overloading, calling on relevant authorities to intensify enforcement of traffic laws to curb the growing menace
