A tragic incident occurred on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, where a 12-year-old girl identified as Nabilat lost her life after falling into a well.
The incident happened at about 10:35 a.m. on Busari Alao Street in the Ikoyi community, Irewolede area of the city. The young girl was said to be fetching water when she reportedly slipped and fell into the well.
The situation threw residents into panic as they made frantic efforts to rescue her. A resident identified as Mayowa later alerted the Kwara State Fire Service for assistance.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters responded swiftly and recovered the girl’s body from the well. Her remains were subsequently handed over to a family member.
Adekunle explained that preliminary findings indicated the victim slipped while attempting to fetch water. He added that the Director of the Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed deep sadness over the incident and urged residents to exercise greater caution during their daily activities.
He further advised families to refrain from sending young children to fetch water from domestic wells to prevent similar tragedies.
